Fabio Cornale has found his way back into the kitchen - much to the delight of those with a sweet tooth.

Bella Cakes and Pastries opened at 459 East Columbia St. on Feb. 1.

The bakery's specialties include cannoli, eclairs, strawberry tarts and cakes.

"We are an Italian bakery specializing in cakes and pastries. That is my husband's specialty," said Gina Cornale. "We have got everything."

Baking is in Fabio's blood.

"My husband has been baking since he was nine. His uncle owns Bon Bon Bakery," Gina noted. "It's four generations of bakers. It's his love."

While Fabio had been working for a bakery supply company, many folks have been encouraging him to get back into the kitchen.

"Everyone said, 'You are wasting your talent,'" Gina said. "He wasn't ready. It's is a big time factor. You are putting in 15 or 16 hour days."

Once he decided the time was right, Fabio decided to set up shop in Sapperton.

"He is definitely back in his element," Gina said.

Fabio gutted and renovated the space that formerly housed another bakery.

"One customer said it is very Tuscany," Gina said of the renovation. "It is very warm and European-looking."

Since opening, Bella Cakes and Pastries has received "fantastic" support from customers.

"We thought it was central to everything," Gina said about the Sapperton location.

"We have a friend who is in real estate. She said it is really up and coming."

The bakery is also getting some high praise from area merchants.

"It looks like something right out of Italy," said Rose Ternes of Cadeaux Gifts and Home Embellishments. "It looks fantastic."

The husband and wife team of Fabio and Gina Cornale invite you to experience why, in less than six months at their location, Bella Cakes & Pastries, continues to grow.

The New Westminster-raised Gina has many years of retail experience, and she teamed up with her husband to bring their passion for Italian baked goods to the community. All of their products are made right there on the premises, using time-honoured recipes. They offer a complete line of beautiful and delicious custom-made cakes, pastries and sweets for all occasions.

As with many family owned business, this busy mother of three spends many hours behind the scenes to ensure that each customer leaves happy and wanting for more, each and every time.

She has a great sense of pride about the community and helping others is an integral part of their business. They donated regularly to a number of local organizations including: Queen's Park Preschool, New Westminster Senior Secondary Music Program, and the Make A Wish Foundation, to name just a few. She says they love to show their appreciation to the dedicated men and women at the New Westminster Police department and the fire department by dropping off goodies.

In addition, no leftovers go to waste. Everyday a truck from the New Westminster Gospel Mission picks up goodies for the less fortunate in the community.
